registration continued Horray! 3 more hours spent on registration and still no closer to my goal... I've talked to the University College dean, Rutgers cashier's office, registrar, and my previous college's academic services. They all referred me to somewhere else. But I did find this helpful information from the last person I talked to. Apparently, even though I'm allowed to take part-time classes I'm not part of the part-time college (University College) Even though I submitted paperwork last week to be admitted to that college, for some reason my current status is Cook College (the college I just graduated from last May). Now, as a Cook student I shouldn't be able to register part-time at all, yet that's what I did yesterday in the University College office. They didn't tell me I was a Cook student at the time. I was actually told that it's most likely that my paperwork hasn't been processed at all yet, and my Cook status is simply leftover from last semester. Since I can't talk to any more Deans until tomorrow, I tried a little experiment. I went to the student ID card office and asked to have my card renewed. It was set to expire at the end of September since I graduated last May. Without the card I lose access to the rec center, computer labs, movie discounts and other stuff. If my status was merely leftover from last semester, I shouldn't be able to get a new card. Otherwise all alumni could exploit the system. When I went to the office, the worker took my card and punched in my ID number. Then the greatest thing happened. Her face twisted up with a pained, confused look. It was every bit of agony that I've felt so far while trying to register for my class! I don't know what she saw in the computer to give her that look, but suddenly I felt completely vindicated. I was asked "What is your graduation date?" So I explained that I don't have one, I graduated Cook and then reregistered as a nonmatriculated University College student. This was enough, without any further questions, to get me a brand new ID good until next September! I don't know if it confirms my University College status or they just give ID's out to anyone with a story, but it makes for a nice consolation prize until this whole thing is worked out. I've been really upset because Rutgers makes it seem like all my problems are due to late registration and not a bad system, while in fact it malfunctions in just the right way so that I can take classes but have to pay more them I'm supposed to. At least me getting this ID allows me access to some benefits I shouldn't have, so I can feel like the malfunctions can work in my favor too. And even if I get fed up with this and have to deregister from everything, I can keep the ID and its benefits. - ophelia |
